Data Migration
Data migration moves selected records from a source into a new system while preserving their meaning, relationships and required history. A successful import count is only one check.
A worked example
A practical example to make the concept clear.
| Step | Illustrative record and result |
|---|---|
| Starting record | An example source has 100 customers and 12 open invoices totalling 600,000 IQD. |
| Change or calculation | Map each old customer ID to its new ID and preserve invoice references, currency, due dates and remaining balances. |
| Meaning and exception | Reconcile both 12 invoices and 600,000 IQD, then allocate a sample partial payment to the correct invoice. A matching row count alone cannot prove correct relationships. |
Why it matters
Map fields and IDs, test a difficult sample, then reconcile totals and run actual workflows. A source backup is useful for cutover safety, but it does not replace business-data mapping or acceptance checks.
